Tehran Trailer Review: John Abraham Leads A Riveting Spy Thriller Based On True Events

John Abraham is ready to stir things up again — and this time, he’s not just punching bad guys for show. He’s diving head-first into a messy world of international conspiracies in Tehran. After months of waiting and second-guessing whether it would hit theatres or not, the trailer has finally dropped — and it’s giving fans exactly what they’d hoped for: action, suspense, and a story that feels ripped straight from the headlines.

The big twist? Instead of a theatre release, Tehran will land straight on ZEE5 this Independence Day. So if you’re someone who loves real-world thrillers with a lot of grey areas, you might want to mark your calendar now.

The (2 minutes 32 seconds) trailer doesn’t waste time — it jumps right into chaos. We see news of three deadly blasts that shake everything up. The next thing you know, top officials are pointing fingers and panicking about whether it’s a terrorist attack. That’s when John Abraham’s character, Rajeev Kumar, enters the frame.

Rajeev is a Delhi Police officer — but he’s no superhero in a shiny costume. He’s sharp, tough, and clearly carrying a lot of weight on his shoulders. From the moment he appears on screen, you know he’s not just fighting criminals — he’s fighting bigger battles that most of us can’t even see.

The trailer drops plenty of questions without handing you any easy answers. Rajeev saves lives, but the same people he saves seem ready to abandon him in the blink of an eye. Iran wants him caught, India washes its hands off him — and the trailer leaves you wondering: is he a traitor pretending to be a hero, or a true patriot paying the price for doing what’s right?

Visually, the trailer is tense and gritty. The chases feel real. The fights feel raw. You even catch glimpses of emotional moments with Manushi Chhillar and Neeru Bajwa, reminding you that this story isn’t just about bombs and bullets — there are people caught in the crossfire too.

And one thing that really stands out? It’s not all Hindi. You hear Farsi and English too, which makes the whole vibe feel more authentic and grounded in the real conflicts it’s inspired by.

So, does the trailer deliver? By the look of it — yes, and then some. Fans have already flooded social media, calling Tehran raw, sharp, and refreshingly bold for Bollywood. Many are comparing it to John’s other intense roles in films like Madras Cafe and Batla House — and rightly so. He’s at his best when he mixes that quiet intensity with raw action, and Tehran looks like another chance for him to do just that.

One thing that keeps popping up is fans wishing they could watch this in theatres. And you can see why — the big chase scenes and tight street fights would look incredible on a giant screen. But the makers have their reasons for choosing a direct digital release instead. The film is under two hours, and the multilingual dialogues make it feel like something that works better at home, raw and uncut.

What really works for this trailer is how it refuses to paint Rajeev as a squeaky-clean hero. There’s a line in the trailer — “Tehran isn’t about heroes; it’s about hard choices.” And that’s the hook. It hints at moral grey zones, messy politics, and sacrifices that don’t always get you medals.

Director Arun Gopalan and Maddock Films seem to be aiming higher than just another guns-and-glory flick. If the film can balance the heavy political angle with the nail-biting action teased in the trailer, Tehran could be a refreshing break from the same old Bollywood formula. Watch the trailer here:

If you haven’t watched the Tehran trailer yet, stop scrolling and go do it now. It is sad that this film is not coming to the big screens. Another solid content has been wasted for John  Abraham, due to poor marketing. First, it was The Diplomat, and it seems Tehran is another.  It’s streaming on ZEE5’s official YouTube channel. If John Abraham in an intense action role is your thing, or if you’re someone who likes thrillers that actually make you think, this one should be on your must-watch list.

Tehran drops on ZEE5 on August 15 — a fitting release date for a story all about loyalty, betrayal, and the cost of choosing your country over everything else. So get ready to settle in with your favourite snacks and see John Abraham tackle a world where no one’s hands are truly clean.
