Hrithik Roshan, Kiara Advani, and Jr NTR’s War 2, directed by Ayan Mukerji, entered cinemas with sky-high buzz and record-breaking openings. With Independence Day advantage, a huge star cast, and the powerful backing of YRF Spy Universe, the film was expected to maintain solid momentum across its extended weekend. However, despite crossing the ₹100 crore mark in Hindi, the film couldn’t sustain the same fiery pace after Friday, and the Telugu version particularly took a hit.
Hindi Holds, Telugu Falters
The Hindi version of War 2 managed to show a marginal rise on Sunday (₹26.50 crore vs ₹26 crore on Saturday), crossing the crucial ₹100 crore benchmark in just four days. While this is definitely a strong feat, expectations were set much higher considering Hrithik Roshan’s star power and the massive buzz before release. Read our War 2 Movie Review.
The Telugu version, headlined by Jr NTR’s presence, saw a worrying slide after Day 1. From ₹22.75 crore on Thursday to just ₹5.35 crore by Sunday, the drop has severely impacted War 2’s overall extended weekend numbers. Tamil business remained negligible across all four days, contributing just ₹1.20 crore in total.

| Day 3 (Sat) | Rs 33.25 crore | Rs 26 crore | Rs 6.95 crore | Rs 30 lakh |
| Day 4 (Sun) | Rs 32.15 crore | Rs 26.50 crore | Rs 5.35 crore | Rs 30 lakh |

A Missed Opportunity?
Despite strong opening numbers, the film hasn’t fully capitalized on the Independence Day boost. Compared to its huge budget, War 2 needed consistent growth across all languages. Instead, the decline in the Telugu belt has dented its chances of chasing down the lifetime records of other recent blockbusters.
Trade experts believe that Monday’s hold will be crucial. If the film drops heavily today, its lifetime prospects may remain limited, especially since Saiyaara and Mahavatar Narsimha have both increased their screen count due to higher audience demand.
The Road Ahead For War 2
With ₹174.75 crore nett in extended weekend 1, War 2 has established itself as a strong opener but not an outright record-breaker. The Hindi audience has embraced Hrithik Roshan once again, but Jr NTR’s presence hasn’t translated into expected Telugu numbers.
The upcoming weekdays will now decide whether War 2 can recover its gigantic budget or fall short of expectations. For the Spy Universe, it’s a mixed signal — while the stardom is intact, the storytelling and word-of-mouth may not be as powerful as anticipated.
