Sunny Deol’s Ikka is much more than a conventional courtroom thriller. Directed by Siddharth P. Malhotra, the Netflix original combines an engaging legal battle with an emotional family drama, making the climax both thrilling and deeply moving. At the centre of the story is Arjun Mehra played by Sunny Deol, an ace defence lawyer known as “Ikka” because of his remarkable success in court. Throughout his career, Arjun has followed one rule without compromise—he only defends clients he believes are innocent.

However, that belief is put to the ultimate test when fate forces him to represent a man he is convinced is guilty. As the story unfolds, Ikka raises questions about morality, justice, and the sacrifices a parent is willing to make for their child before delivering an unexpected final twist.

Spoiler: This article contains major spoilers from Ikka. If you haven’t watched the film yet, this is the perfect time to stop reading.

Why Does Arjun Agree To Defend Shauryaman?

Arjun’s life changes dramatically when influential politician Harshvardhan Gaur approaches him to defend his son, Shauryaman (Akshaye Khanna), who is accused of attacking Soma Mittal. Believing Shauryaman is guilty, Arjun immediately rejects the offer, staying true to the principles that have defined his legal career. However, his world is turned upside down after his daughter Samaira is diagnosed with advanced-stage leukemia. Doctors inform Arjun and his wife Avantika that Samaira urgently needs a stem cell transplant, but neither of them is a compatible donor.

The biggest revelation comes when Arjun discovers that he is not Samaira’s biological father and that the only person capable of saving her life is Shauryaman. Faced with an impossible decision, Arjun agrees to defend the very man he believes committed the crime, placing his daughter’s life above his own moral convictions.

How Does The Murder Trial Unfold?

Once the trial begins, Shauryaman insists he is innocent. According to his version of events, he met Soma at a nightclub, spent some time with her, and the two parted ways after an argument inside his car. He claims someone else must have attacked her later that night. Initially, Arjun succeeds in creating reasonable doubt by exposing inconsistencies in witness statements and pointing towards Soma’s possessive former boyfriend as another possible suspect.

However, the prosecution (Tillotama Shome) regains momentum when forensic experts reveal that traces of Soma’s blood were found inside Shauryaman’s car. Investigators also conclude that the car key may have been used as the murder weapon. The evidence puts Arjun under tremendous pressure, particularly because Shauryaman repeatedly reminds him that Samaira’s life depends entirely on winning the case.

Why Is Shauryaman Declared Not Guilty?

Just when it appears that Shauryaman’s conviction is inevitable, Arjun uncovers a crucial piece of evidence. During his investigation, Shauryaman’s wife Gauri reveals that she had made two emergency calls to the police on the night of the murder after being subjected to domestic abuse. The recorded calls, complete with official timestamps, appear to establish that Shauryaman was at home during the time Soma was attacked.

Arjun presents these recordings before the court, and the prosecution fails to challenge the timeline. Accepting the evidence, the judge acquits Shauryaman of all charges. The verdict shocks everyone inside the courtroom. Soma’s family believes justice has failed, while prosecutor Madhura Banerjee is left convinced that a guilty man has escaped punishment. For Arjun, however, the acquittal ensures that Shauryaman will fulfil his promise of donating stem cells to save Samaira.

Does Shauryaman Really Escape Justice?

Although the courtroom verdict suggests that Shauryaman has successfully escaped punishment, Ikka saves its biggest surprise for the final act. After donating his stem cells, Shauryaman believes he has defeated the legal system and even invites Arjun to celebrate the victory. However, Arjun has quietly continued investigating the case. While listening to Gauri’s emergency calls once again, he notices something everyone else had overlooked—the threatening male voice heard during the first call does not belong to Shauryaman but to the Gaur family’s trusted assistant, Chatur.

This discovery exposes a carefully planned conspiracy. Acting on Shauryaman’s instructions, Chatur had impersonated him to create a false alibi and had also attacked the unhoused man who sold Shauryaman a mobile phone on the night of the murder, eliminating another crucial witness. Once police trace and arrest Chatur, fresh evidence begins to emerge, eventually leading to Shauryaman’s rearrest on murder as well as conspiracy charges. The final twist confirms that while Shauryaman managed to manipulate the courtroom once, he could not outrun the truth forever.

Thankfully, Samaira’s story ends on a hopeful note. Before his rearrest, Shauryaman honours the agreement he made with Arjun and donates his stem cells, allowing Samaira to undergo the life-saving transplant. The procedure is successful, giving her a second chance at life and bringing immense relief to Arjun and Avantika. In many ways, the ending allows Arjun to achieve what once seemed impossible. He manages to save his daughter without permanently sacrificing his conscience, proving that his difficult decision did not ultimately come at the cost of justice.

Beyond the courtroom drama, Ikka is ultimately a story about difficult choices and moral responsibility. Throughout the film, Arjun struggles with the conflict between his professional ethics and his responsibilities as a father. The climax resolves this dilemma in a satisfying manner by showing that justice may be delayed, but it is not always denied. While Shauryaman temporarily manipulates the legal system through a carefully orchestrated conspiracy, Arjun refuses to stop searching for the truth even after winning the case.

The ending reinforces the idea that intelligence, patience, and perseverance can expose even the most carefully hidden crimes. Rather than relying solely on dramatic courtroom arguments, Ikka concludes with a message that truth eventually prevails, making the ending both emotionally rewarding and morally satisfying.

Final Verdict

Ikka succeeds because it blends an engaging legal thriller with an emotionally compelling family story. Sunny Deol delivers a restrained yet powerful performance as Arjun Mehra, portraying a father forced to choose between his principles and his daughter’s life, while Akshaye Khanna brings depth and unpredictability to the role of Shauryaman.

Instead of ending with a simple courtroom verdict, the film delivers one final twist that changes everything, ensuring that both justice and hope prevail. By the time the credits roll, Ikka leaves viewers with a satisfying conclusion that rewards patience and reminds us that while the law can sometimes be manipulated, the truth eventually finds its way to the surface.
