Indian animation has been going through an interesting phase lately. While films like Mahavatar Narsimha have shown that mythology and animation can come together effectively, there is still a lot of unexplored potential in this space. Mahaprabhu Jagannath takes another step in that direction. Directed by Shripad Warkhedkar, the animated film features the voices of Prachi Save Saathi as Lord Jagannath and Jagan, Sonal Kaushal as Balram, and Aadityaraj Sharma as Ahamasur.
The film revolves around Lord Jagannath and his young friend Balram, who embark on an extraordinary journey to rescue devotees captured by the evil Ahamasur. What makes Mahaprabhu Jagannath special is that it does not limit itself to being a children’s film. There is enough mythology, adventure, emotion and spiritual value here for adults as well. In fact, at a time when good animated films for Indian children remain limited, this one deserves attention.

The story begins inside an ashram where several children are being educated. Among them is Aham Kumar, an intelligent but rebellious boy. His outlook towards humanity and God is very different from everyone around him. After leaving the ashram, Aham begins questioning why people believe in God.
His curiosity soon turns into arrogance. He eventually creates his own world called Ahamlok and becomes Ahamasur. His ambition is simple but dangerous. He wants everyone to worship him as the only God. To establish his supremacy, Ahamasur starts abducting devotees of Lord Jagannath from Earth. He keeps them captive and forces them to sing his praises. His ultimate goal is not just to control the devotees but to challenge Lord Jagannath himself.

Meanwhile, Balram, a young boy, develops a beautiful friendship with Lord Jagannath. When the threat of Ahamasur continues to grow, Jagannath and Balram approach Lord Brahma for a solution. However, the answer they receive is not what they expected.
This leads Jagannath and Balram on a fascinating journey. Their search for the missing devotees takes them through Naag Lok, Paataal Lok and Swarg Lok. Each world adds something new to their adventure. The mystery surrounding Ahamasur, his unusual powers and the revelation made by Lord Brahma form the backbone of the narrative. The film eventually builds towards a grand confrontation inside Ahamlok.

Director Shripad Warkhedkar clearly understands this divine world. Having previously worked on shows like Jai Jagannath and Anur Nakul The Asuras, he brings that experience to the big screen. His biggest achievement is keeping the film accessible to children without making it too simplistic for adults.
The screenplay by Pallavi Sharma is one of the strongest aspects of the film. It moves at a brisk pace and rarely allows the narrative to lose momentum. The basic Good versus Evil conflict may not be new, but the way Ahamasur’s character and his obsession with becoming the only God are presented keeps the story interesting.
The dialogues deserve special mention. There is a certain beauty in the pure Hindi used throughout the film. The language feels natural within this mythological world and adds to the overall experience without becoming difficult to follow.
There are several memorable moments throughout the film. The story explains Ahamasur’s jealousy towards Jagannath, his pursuit of extraordinary powers and the extent of his ambition without unnecessarily stretching the narrative. The 1 hour 24 minute runtime also works in its favour. There is very little room for the film to become boring.
The animation is good, although this is one area where the makers could have pushed themselves further. It remains consistent with the visual world established earlier and does not feel disconnected from the source material.
The climax is where Mahaprabhu Jagannath truly comes alive. The Vishwaroop sequence involving Jagannath is visually striking and emotionally powerful. The eventual conclusion to Ahamasur’s story is another highlight. These are the moments that make the film particularly satisfying on the big screen.
The music complements the film well. Jai Jai Jagannath is the standout song, with Arjit Shrivastava’s tune, Atharv Bakshi’s vocals and Atul Kumar Verma’s lyrics coming together beautifully. Aviral Kumar’s background score is equally important. It stays in sync with the changing mood and adds weight to the important sequences.
Mahaprabhu Jagannath Performances
Since this is an animated film, the voice cast plays a crucial role in bringing the characters to life. Thankfully, the vocal performances are excellent. Prachi Save Saathi is simply perfect as Lord Jagannath and Jagan. There is warmth and innocence in the voice, which makes the character instantly likeable. Sonal Kaushal is equally effective as Balram and brings the right amount of energy to the character.
Aadityaraj Sharma gets the most challenging role as Ahamasur. His voice has the required fire, arrogance and demonic quality. It makes Ahamasur feel threatening without becoming exaggerated. The remaining voice artists also fit their respective characters well. The voice direction by Rajeev Rai and Jagroshan Homnath Pandey deserves credit for maintaining consistency across the film.
The animation team, including Vinay Shinde, Prasanna Kumar Rout and Laxmidhar Jena, along with character designers Biswar Tudu, Rajib Lochan Sethy and Chandrashekhar Sahoo, also deserve appreciation for creating a world that remains visually engaging.
Final Verdict
Mahaprabhu Jagannath is a must-watch animated film for both kids and adults. It combines mythology, adventure, humour and spirituality without losing sight of its core message. The animation could have been better in places, but the strong screenplay, beautiful Hindi dialogues, effective voice cast, soulful music and outstanding climax more than make up for it.
After Mahavatar Narsimha, Mahaprabhu Jagannath is another welcome addition to India’s growing animated space. Take your kids to the theatre and experience this one on the big screen. The film has the potential to surprise everyone at the Box Office.
