Kareena Kapoor Khan is returning to the big screen with Daayra, an investigative crime drama directed by Meghna Gulzar. The film also marks the first on screen collaboration between Kareena and Prithviraj Sukumaran. The trailer sets up a disturbing case and a difficult question about justice, punishment and the law. It is not a conventional cop thriller. The conflict here appears to be as much ideological as it is investigative.

The 2 minute 20 second trailer keeps the focus on a gang rape case, a series of encounters and two police officers who have very different ideas about justice. Kareena plays DCP Ajooni Kohli, while Prithviraj plays DCP Raman Kumar. From the trailer, it is clear that their paths are about to collide.
The trailer begins with a distressed woman desperately searching for her daughter. The mood immediately turns serious as the footage introduces a horrifying crime and its aftermath. Prithviraj’s Raman Kumar is seen taking the accused juveniles to an isolated location before shooting them. The incident is later shown as an encounter.
Kareena’s Ajooni Kohli enters the story while investigating the incident. She questions Raman about the encounter and also brings up three other encounters he carried out in the past in self defence. Her investigation gradually starts uncovering questions around Raman’s actions.
The trailer shows the investigation progressing through crime scene recreation and questioning. Raman, however, doesn’t appear particularly disturbed by the scrutiny. When he is warned about the consequences, he simply says, “Again a family has lost their daughter.”
Ajooni then points out that one of the accused was going to turn 17. This becomes an important point in the trailer because the case isn’t only about the crime anymore. It also raises questions about juvenile protection and whether the law should protect someone accused of committing such a heinous act.
Towards the end, Kareena’s character makes her position clear. She says that she works within the boundaries of the law. Raman disagrees and questions how a juvenile capable of committing such a crime can be protected by the Juvenile Protection Law.
The trailer ends without giving a clear answer. Instead, it leaves audiences with the central question of the film. Can justice always be served within the boundaries of the law?

The Daayra trailer works because it doesn’t try to turn a sensitive subject into a conventional commercial thriller. The tension comes from the conflict between Kareena and Prithviraj’s characters. Both appear convinced about their respective positions, and that makes their confrontation more interesting.
Prithviraj makes a strong impression as Raman Kumar. There is a certain calmness in his character even when he is being questioned about the encounters. He doesn’t look like someone who regrets his actions. Instead, he seems to genuinely believe that he is doing what is necessary. That makes the character more intriguing than a straightforward police officer who simply takes the law into his own hands.
Kareena also looks convincing as Ajooni. Her character is more controlled and investigative. She isn’t approaching the case purely from an emotional perspective. She wants answers. She wants to understand what happened and whether Raman crossed the line.
That difference between the two characters gives the trailer its strongest hook. The subject itself is difficult, but Meghna Gulzar’s treatment appears restrained. The trailer doesn’t depend on excessive violence or dramatic background moments to create impact. Instead, it allows the case and the moral conflict to drive the tension.
Another thing that works is the decision to leave several questions unanswered. We know what happened on the surface. We know about the encounters. We know why Ajooni begins investigating Raman. But the larger circumstances surrounding the case remain unclear. That is important for an investigative drama.

The trailer gives enough information to understand the conflict without completely explaining where the story is headed. The biggest strength, however, remains the Kareena Kapoor and Prithviraj Sukumaran face off. Their first collaboration already creates curiosity, and the trailer gives us enough glimpses to suggest that their characters will carry the film.
There is also a serious emotional question running underneath the investigation. When a horrific crime is committed, how far can someone go in the name of justice? And at what point does punishment become a crime itself? The trailer doesn’t attempt to answer these questions. It simply puts them in front of the audience. The trailer creates curiosity about the case and the conflict, but it doesn’t quite deliver that one moment that stays with you after it ends.
Still, that may also be deliberate. Daayra appears to be positioning itself as a serious investigative drama rather than an adrenaline driven thriller. The absence of songs is another interesting choice. Gulzar had earlier confirmed that the film has no songs, and the trailer maintains that serious tone throughout. There is no attempt to break the mood. Everything remains focused on the investigation and the moral dilemma.
Final Thoughts
Overall, the Daayra trailer does enough to create curiosity. Kareena Kapoor and Prithviraj Sukumaran are clearly the centre of the conflict, and both bring different shades to their characters. The subject is disturbing, the questions are uncomfortable and the trailer wisely refuses to offer easy answers.
Daayra is not selling itself through spectacle. It is selling a question. When the law fails to satisfy our idea of justice, who gets to decide what is right? That is a question worth taking to the theatre.
