Bollywood sequels have had a tough run in recent years. Most films try to cash in on nostalgia but end up disappointing the audience. Recently, Son of Sardaar 2 tanked at the box office. But, thankfully, De De Pyaar De 2 breaks that pattern with a refreshing and genuinely entertaining follow-up that stays true to its world while pushing the drama and comedy to new levels. DDPD 2 stars Ajay Devgn, R. Madhavan, Rakul Preet Singh, Jaaved Jaaferi, Meezaan Jafri, Gautami Kapoor, and Ishita Dutta. It is directed by Anshul Sharma.
De De Pyaar De 2 picks up where the first part left off and dives straight into Ashish and Ayesha’s future, their messy families, and their even messier emotions. The good thing is that the movie does not rely only on jokes. It brings a proper story, solid confrontations, and emotional warmth that lifts everything. Let’s break it down.
De De Pyaar De 2 Story
The sequel continues the journey of Ashish Mehra, or Ashu, played by Ajay Devgn. His relationship with Ayesha Khurana, played by Rakul Preet Singh, has survived family drama, age gap jokes, and social judgment. Now their love is stepping into a bigger commitment — marriage. But for that to happen, Ashu needs to win the trust of Ayesha’s parents, Rajji Khurana and his wife, played by R. Madhavan and Gautami Kapoor.
Ashu decides to visit them in India. The Khuranas are modern, chilled-out people who claim they have no issue with age gap relationships or Ashu’s divorce, or the fact that he has two grown-up kids. Everything seems smooth until they meet Ashish in person. Rajji suddenly realises that Ashish is barely a year younger than him. That shock dissolves all his modern values in seconds.
The story then shifts into a hilarious war between Ashish and Rajji. The father refuses to let his daughter marry a man who feels like an “uncle”. From this point, DDPD 2 becomes a laugh-heavy rollercoaster. Rajji tries everything to break their bond. He even brings back Ayesha’s childhood friend Sameer, played by Meezaan Jafri, hoping that the old spark might return.
What follows is chaos, awkward dinners, loud confrontations, sweet moments, and a growing tension between Ashish and Ayesha. The story keeps asking one question. Will love survive when a father sees his daughter’s boyfriend as his own contemporary? The film answers this with humor, emotional depth, and plenty of fun.
De De Pyaar De 2 Movie Review
Director Anshul Sharma has done a good job with this sequel. The best thing is that De De Pyaar De 2 does not feel like a forced sequel. DDPD 2 is a clear improvement over the first part in many ways. The humour feels sharper. The situations feel more relatable. Luv Ranjan and Tarun Jain’s writing in De De Pyaar De 2 is clever, with pop-culture references that genuinely land. What works best is how the film mixes comedy with emotion. It never becomes slapstick. The jokes come from the characters’ insecurities, awkwardness, and family drama.
The first half of De De Pyaar De 2 sets the tone quickly. Scenes move fast. The gags flow one after another. The awkward interactions between Ajay and Madhavan are pure gold. There is also a surprising emotional scene between Madhavan and Rakul, which brings some weight to the first half.
The second half is fun, bigger, and more dramatic. There are moments in De De Pyaar De 2 where the pace slows down, but the film finds its rhythm again once Meezaan enters. The writing becomes louder here, yet it works because the reactions feel so natural. One major twist in the end might feel predictable, but it still lands well because the performances make it work.
The music is decent. Honey Singh’s “Jhoom Sharabi” is the only track that truly sticks. The rest stay in the background. But the film never depends on songs. Its backbone is its writing and the crackling chemistry between the leads.
De De Pyaar De 2 Performances
Ajay Devgn shines in a genre he once ruled. His timing is sharp. He carries the awkward scenes with such ease that you can’t help but laugh. He also nails the emotional beats, especially the scenes where he feels threatened by Ayesha’s chemistry with Sameer.
R. Madhavan, though, walks away with the film. His comic timing is superb. His confusion, frustration, and fake-modern attitude create some of the funniest moments. Every time he shares the frame with Ajay, the screen lights up.
Rakul Preet Singh looks stunning. She manages to blend sweetness with fire. At times, she is a little loud, but her presence always holds the frame. She balances the emotional scenes well, especially those involving Rajji.
Jaaved Jaaferi is excellent as Ashish’s friend Ronak. His one-liners, expressions, and spontaneous energy bring the house down.
Meezaan Jafri surprises with a strong performance. His comic timing has improved a lot. He enters late, but brings an important spark to the narrative.
Gautami Kapoor is grounded and effective. Ishita Dutta does well, though her role is shorter and gets overshadowed.
Final Verdict
De De Pyaar De 2 brings comedy back to the big screen with confidence. It has solid writing, entertaining conflicts, and memorable characters. The film dips slightly in the second half but recovers quickly. What makes De De Pyaar De 2 special is how it handles relationships. It talks about age gaps, parental judgment, insecurity, and acceptance in a fun way. And yes, it ends with a big hint for a sequel, and the basic idea of that sequel is even funnier than this one.
Overall, DDPD 2 is a must-watch for anyone who loves clean, witty, emotional comedy. It leaves you smiling, and that is its biggest win.
