There are some films that ask you to think. There are some films that try to deliver a social message. And then there are films that simply want you to switch off your brain, sit back with a bucket of popcorn, and laugh for two hours. Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai belongs firmly in the third category.
Headlined by Varun Dhawan, Mrunal Thakur, and Pooja Hegde, Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai (HJTIHH) marks another collaboration between David Dhawan and his son Varun Dhawan. Over the years, the father-son duo has delivered entertainers like Main Tera Hero and Judwaa 2, and with Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai, they return to familiar territory filled with confusion, misunderstandings, romance, music, and complete madness.
Also starring Jimmy Shergill, Maniesh Paul, Chunky Pandey, Mouni Roy, Rakesh Bedi, Ali Asgar, Rajesh Kumar, Manoj Pahwa, Rajpal Yadav, and Johny Lever, Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai embraces the classic David Dhawan formula wholeheartedly.
The result is a colorful entertainer that doesn’t always hit the mark but manages to deliver enough laughs and enjoyable moments to keep audiences entertained.
Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai (HJTIHH) Story
The story revolves around Jaswinder, fondly called Jass, played by Varun Dhawan. He works as a wedding photographer and falls in love with Bani, played by Mrunal Thakur, while covering her sister’s wedding celebrations. The attraction is instant.
Bani falls for his charm, and before long, the two get married. For a while, life appears perfect. However, five years later, cracks begin to appear in their relationship. Jass desperately wants to become a father. Bani does not share the same desire.
The disagreement grows so serious that the couple decides to separate. During divorce proceedings, a judge, played hilariously by Ali Asgar, grants them six months in the hope that they might reconsider their decision. But Bani is determined.
Heartbroken and emotionally exhausted, Jass leaves India and shifts to London. There he meets Preet, played by Pooja Hegde. The two quickly fall in love and begin a new chapter together. Everything seems to be falling into place.

Until one day, Bani suddenly arrives at Jass’s house and announces that she is pregnant with his child. Before Jass can process the shock, Preet reveals that she is pregnant too. From struggling to have one child to suddenly expecting two, Jass finds himself trapped in the most bizarre situation imaginable.
What follows is a whirlwind of lies, misunderstandings, awkward encounters, hidden truths, and complete chaos as Jass desperately tries to keep both women from discovering the truth. Whether he succeeds or ends up destroying everything forms the heart of the story.
Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai Review
David Dhawan knows exactly what kind of film he is making. He has no interest in logic, realism, or subtle storytelling. His sole objective is entertainment. Thankfully, for the most part, he succeeds.
The story by Yunus Sajawal feels very much at home in David Dhawan’s cinematic universe. It is outrageous, over-the-top, and completely dependent on confusion-driven comedy. The screenplay constantly throws Jass into increasingly ridiculous situations.
While not every joke lands, the film keeps moving at such a brisk pace that audiences rarely get time to dwell on its flaws. The biggest issue lies in the first half. The opening twenty minutes struggle to generate laughter. Several jokes feel forced, and some comic situations take longer than necessary to become funny. At times, it feels as though the film is still searching for its rhythm.
Thankfully, things improve significantly after the interval. Once the misunderstandings begin piling up and Jass’s situation becomes more complicated, the film finds its groove. The second half delivers most of the laughs and contains several genuinely funny sequences.
Farhad Samji’s dialogues are hit and miss initially but become considerably more effective later. Several one-liners draw inspiration from popular films, songs, memes, and contemporary pop culture, generating decent laughs. What works particularly well is the film’s commitment to maintaining a lighthearted tone.
Even when dealing with topics like marriage, parenthood, and relationships, the film never becomes preachy. It remains focused on entertainment. The writing also deserves credit for handling the female characters respectfully. Neither Bani nor Preet are reduced to caricatures, and both are given emotional moments that help balance the comedy. However, the film occasionally suffers from familiarity.
Many situations evoke memories of films like Garam Masala, Main Tera Hero, and several other confusion comedies. While David Dhawan’s signature style remains enjoyable, there are moments when the narrative feels overly predictable. Yes, the climax is another missed opportunity. Given the level of chaos built throughout the film, there was enormous scope for a crazier and more explosive finale. Instead, the resolution arrives a little too conveniently.
Technically, Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai is polished and visually attractive. The cinematography captures beautiful international locations with style. The vibrant color palette perfectly complements the film’s energetic tone. The production design adds glamour, while the costumes enhance the overall appeal of the characters. Raju Singh’s background score effectively supports the madness unfolding on screen.
The music album is another major positive. ‘Wow’ works as a peppy dance number. ‘Tera Ho Jaun’ adds romance. ‘Vyah Karwado Ji’ fits perfectly into the wedding atmosphere. Meanwhile, ‘Chunnari Chunnari’ brings a strong dose of nostalgia that audiences are likely to enjoy. The editing keeps the narrative moving, though trimming a few repetitive portions could have improved the pacing further.
Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai Performances
Varun Dhawan is clearly having a blast. This is the actor returning to the zone that made audiences fall in love with him in films like Main Tera Hero and Judwaa 2. His energy is infectious, his comic timing remains sharp, and he effortlessly carries the film on his shoulders. Yes, there are moments where he goes overboard. But in a David Dhawan entertainer, that is almost expected. Varun embraces the madness wholeheartedly and emerges as the film’s biggest strength.
Mrunal Thakur delivers a strong performance and handles both the emotional and comic moments effectively. She brings warmth and charm to Bani while also ensuring the character remains relatable.
Pooja Hegde looks stunning and matches the film’s glamorous tone perfectly. She shares good chemistry with Varun and performs confidently throughout. Mouni Roy turns out to be one of the film’s biggest surprises. Her quirky character adds fresh energy whenever she appears on screen.
Jimmy Shergill plays his role with conviction and contributes significantly to the humor despite maintaining a relatively serious demeanor. Chunky Pandey once again proves why he remains such a dependable comic performer. His effortless presence generates laughs without trying too hard.
Maniesh Paul has delivered better comic performances in the past, but he still contributes to the overall entertainment. Rajesh Kumar is reliable as always, while Rakesh Bedi leaves an impact despite limited screen time. The cameos by Manoj Pahwa, Rajpal Yadav, Johny Lever, and Kriti Sanon add additional fun to the proceedings.
Final Verdict
Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai does not attempt to reinvent comedy. Nor does it try to become a sophisticated relationship drama. It knows exactly what it wants to be: a loud, colorful, family-friendly entertainer packed with confusion, romance, music, and nonstop chaos.
While the first half struggles to generate consistent laughs and the story occasionally feels familiar, the second half delivers enough entertainment to justify the ticket price. David Dhawan once again proves that he understands the pulse of mainstream audiences better than most filmmakers.
Powered by Varun Dhawan’s energetic performance, strong support from Mrunal Thakur and Pooja Hegde, and plenty of madcap situations, Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai succeeds in its primary goal: making people smile. If you’re looking for logic, look elsewhere. If you’re looking for fun, Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai is a satisfying family entertainer.
