The Yash-starrer Toxic arrived in theatres with expectations that were almost impossible to ignore. After the phenomenal global success of the KGF franchise, the Rocking Star was expected to deliver another major blockbuster. The film also carried the promise of a big-scale gangster drama and had considerable pre-release attention.
However, the theatrical journey has turned into a major disappointment. What started with a massive opening has quickly transformed into one of the biggest box office setbacks of recent times. And now, the film is reportedly facing another major hurdle on the OTT front.
The digital rights of Toxic are still unsold. More importantly, the gap between what the makers reportedly expected and what streaming platforms are currently willing to pay is enormous. The film’s OTT valuation is said to have fallen from expectations of over Rs 200 crore to offers as low as Rs 30 crore.
Toxic Opened Well, But The Momentum Disappeared Quickly

Toxic opened on August 26 with a huge number. The film reportedly collected Rs 120.75 crore net in India on its first Wednesday. On paper, it looked like the beginning of a massive theatrical run. The opening was among the biggest for an Indian film this year. But the film could not maintain that momentum.
The second day brought a massive drop. The collection fell by more than 60 percent to Rs 45.10 crore. The decline continued through the first week. After nine days, including the extended opening period, Toxic had collected Rs 239.30 crore net in India. By its second Sunday, however, the film was down to just Rs 2.89 crore for the day.
That kind of fall is particularly damaging for a film that opened at such a high level. A strong opening usually provides a film with the momentum needed to sustain itself through the following days. In the case of Toxic, the opposite happened. The initial rush could not convert into sustained audience interest.
Toxic Reportedly Faces Rs 300 Crore Loss

The theatrical numbers become even more concerning when the film’s scale and reported economics are taken into consideration. As per industry estimates mentioned in the reference report, the makers are looking at losses of around Rs 300 crore. If the estimate holds, it would make Toxic one of the biggest loss-making feature films in India.
The film has reportedly managed a worldwide gross of Rs 337.80 crore. This includes Rs 293.30 crore from India and Rs 44.50 crore from overseas markets. Its India net collection stands at Rs 245.75 crore across 155,897 shows. That number might appear respectable when viewed without context. But Toxic was never positioned as a regular mid-budget release.
The scale, expectations and reported investment were significantly higher. That is why the theatrical gross has failed to provide the kind of recovery the makers were hoping for. The film is expected to finish its theatrical run under Rs 250 crore net in India. Considering its Rs 120 crore opening, the eventual total highlights just how sharply audience interest declined.
OTT Rights Become The Next Big Problem

The theatrical disappointment has now created a difficult situation for Toxic in the post-theatrical market. According to the report, the team had previously received an offer of Rs 150 crore from a leading streaming platform. However, the makers were reportedly looking for a much bigger deal. A source told Bollywood Hungama:
“The Toxic team had an offer of Rs 150 crores from a leading platform, but the demand from the team was a lot higher, north of Rs 200 crores. Yash was confident that the film would do blockbuster business in theatres, and that in turn, would boost the post-theatrical OTT prices to Rs 200 crore plus. But the results are exactly opposite, as the digital players are now offering an amount as low as Rs 30 crore for the post-theatrical streaming rights for all languages. The biggest offer has come from ZEE5.”
This is a massive difference from the valuation the makers reportedly had in mind. The expectation was straightforward. A blockbuster theatrical performance would increase the film’s value for streaming platforms. Instead, the poor theatrical response has reportedly had the opposite impact.
The current offers are said to be as low as Rs 30 crore for the post-theatrical streaming rights across all languages. The biggest offer reportedly comes from Zee5.
Makers Considering A New Cut For OTT

The OTT rights are not the only concern. The satellite market is also reportedly offering little recovery because of the film’s adult-oriented storytelling. This has reportedly pushed the makers to explore another option. They are said to be considering a completely new edit specifically for the digital release. The source further said:
“The makers are now contemplating a completely new edit for the digital version, with the hope of fetching a bigger amount than what’s on the table. The discussions are underway to figure out a way to reduce the losses, one of which is a new cut for OTT.”
Whether a new OTT edit can significantly improve the film’s streaming valuation remains to be seen. For now, it shows the extent of the financial pressure surrounding the project. Instead of the expected Rs 200 crore-plus digital deal, the film is reportedly facing offers around Rs 30 crore. That is a dramatic fall in valuation.

The theatrical response to Toxic has been largely negative, and Cinetales was also critical of the film. We gave Toxic 1.5 stars out of 5, with the film failing to live up to the expectations surrounding Yash’s return after the KGF franchise. Read the Cinetales Toxic Movie Review
The sharp fall from a Rs 120 crore opening to daily collections of under Rs 3 crore later in the run tells its own story. Strong initial curiosity brought audiences to theatres, but the film could not sustain that interest through word of mouth.
Toxic’s OTT Future Remains Uncertain

Toxic was expected to be another major commercial success for Yash. Instead, its theatrical performance has turned into a major setback, and the OTT rights situation has added another layer to the problem.
The reported journey from an expected Rs 200 crore-plus digital valuation to offers as low as Rs 30 crore is particularly striking. The makers are now reportedly exploring a new edit for the streaming version in an attempt to improve the deal and reduce the losses. For a film that began its theatrical run with Rs 120.75 crore in India on day one, the eventual box office performance has been a dramatic reality check. And with the digital rights still unsold, Toxic now has another battle to fight — this time away from the big screen.
