We’ve all heard that love has no age, but very few films manage to say it without sounding preachy. Aap Jaisa Koi, directed by Vivek Soni, is a refreshing reminder of how a heartfelt story, told with the right mix of humour, style, and soul, can hit the right chord. With R Madhavan leading the charge, this film brings warmth, laughter, and a fair bit of emotional depth to the table.

Aap Jaisa Koi Story

Set in Jamshedpur, the film revolves around Shrirenu Tripathi, played by R Madhavan. He is a 42-year-old Sanskrit teacher who’s spent years being the ideal son, brother, and uncle. However, somehow, love always eluded him. His family—played by Manish Chaudhari, Ayesha Raza, Shriyam Bhagnani, and others—is full of life, and their subtle nudges toward getting him married feel all too relatable.

Enter Madhu Bose (Fatima Sana Shaikh), a spirited 32-year-old from Kolkata who surprisingly shows genuine interest in Shrirenu. What starts as an awkward, almost unbelievable match quickly turns into something sweet and sincere. But just when you think everything is sailing smoothly, a sudden twist derails their story. The second half dives deeper, touching upon past baggage, trust, and the real challenges of falling in love as grown-ups.

Director Vivek Soni nails the tone in Aap Jaisa Koi. The film doesn’t try to reinvent the wheel—it just knows where to steer. The first half is light-hearted and filled with charming moments. Watching Shrirenu’s disbelief slowly melt into affection is equal parts funny and moving. The second half shifts gears with more emotional weight, addressing insecurities and past trauma, and it lands well.

There are a few bumps, though. Some subplots are left hanging, especially the confusing track involving a student digging into Madhu’s family. Also, a few jokes—like the ‘mummy-daddy’ bit—don’t quite land. The character of Chaitali feels undercooked. But these are minor blips in an otherwise smooth ride.

The runtime is crisp at 115 minutes, and the background score complements the story without being overwhelming. There’s a definite fairy-tale vibe to the production design and the way Madhavan’s world is shot—grounded yet whimsical.

R Madhavan is in top form. He brings a kind of gentle vulnerability to Shrirenu that’s both funny and endearing. His awkwardness, especially in early romantic scenes, feels painfully real, and that’s what makes his performance work so well.

Fatima Sana Shaikh brings her spark to Madhu. After Metro In Dino, she is back with another layered performance. She’s mature and brings the right amount of complexity to her character. Her chemistry with Madhavan is unforced and charming.

The supporting cast adds flavour. Manish Chaudhari and Ayesha Raza deliver as the quintessential elder siblings. Shriyam Bhagnani’s scene at the station is memorable. Karan Wahi has a brief but neat role.

Aap Jaisa Koi isn’t trying to make loud statements or chase box office formulas. It’s just a story about two unlikely people trying to figure out love—and it works. With a strong lead cast, heartwarming moments, and a message that feels relevant without being forced, this one’s worth a watch.
