Haunted 3D Echoes Of The Past Review: Vikram Bhatt Delivers Old-School Horror Despite Uneven VFX

Back in 2011, Haunted 3D arrived at a time when Bollywood horror was desperately looking for a fresh identity. Vikram Bhatt’s film stood out because it combined supernatural horror, romance, mystery, and 3D technology in a way audiences had rarely seen before. It was India’s first 3D stereoscopic horror film. More importantly, it gave viewers a haunting love story that remained memorable long after the jump scares faded away. Fifteen years later, Bhatt returns to the franchise with Haunted 3D: Echoes Of The Past.

The expectations are naturally high. Fans of the original hoped for another atmospheric horror tale filled with suspense, emotions, and chilling moments. While Echoes Of The Past certainly carries the DNA of old-school Vikram Bhatt horror, the final result is a mixed bag. The film has an intriguing premise, a gothic setting, and a few effective moments. However, weak writing, and sluggish pacing prevent it from reaching the heights of its predecessor. Also with multilpe movie releases today in Bharat Bhhagya Viddhaata, Main Vaapas Aaunga, and Governor, Haunted 3D Echoes Of The Past is all set to face tough competition at the cinema halls.

Directed by Vikram Bhatt and Manish P. Chavan, the film stars Mimoh Chakraborty, Chetna Pande, Gaurav Bajpai, Hemant Pandey, Shruti Prakash, Praneet Bhatt, and Mannveer Choudharry in key roles.

The story revolves around Devadutt Choudhary, better known as Dev (Mimoh Chakraborty), a successful filmmaker whose upcoming movie is about to hit theatres. On the surface, life seems perfect. However, everything comes crashing down when he discovers his girlfriend and leading lady Sonali cheating on him with another actor.

Heartbroken and emotionally shattered, Dev decides to leave Mumbai without informing anyone. Accompanied by his cousin Titu (Gaurav Bajpai), he embarks on a road trip that eventually brings him to a quiet hill station called Maniktal. Seeking peace and isolation, Dev decides to rent the mysterious Maniktal Palace, a sprawling mansion overlooking a hauntingly beautiful lake. From the moment he enters the property, something feels wrong.

One wing of the mansion remains permanently locked, and the caretaker Trilok (Hemant Pandey) claims that nobody has entered that section for decades. Strange sounds begin echoing through the corridors at night. Doors mysteriously open on their own. Shadows move where nobody should be standing.

Then Dev encounters Sunheri (Chetna Pande). The mysterious young woman appears trapped inside the locked wing of the palace. As Dev tries to understand who she is, he discovers a shocking truth. Sunheri belongs to a different era altogether.

Soon, Dev finds himself caught between two worlds, battling supernatural forces while uncovering dark secrets buried within the mansion’s history. What follows is a tale of love, loss, revenge, and spirits that refuse to let the past stay buried.

Haunted 3D Echoes Of The Past Movie Review

The biggest strength of Haunted 3D: Echoes Of The Past is undoubtedly its concept. Vikram Bhatt understands the appeal of gothic horror. Haunted mansions, tragic love stories, mysterious spirits, and forgotten secrets have always been his comfort zone. The film contains all the ingredients required for an engaging supernatural thriller.

The problem lies in the execution. The narrative takes far too long to get going. The first hour spends excessive time establishing the atmosphere without offering enough payoff. While slow-burn horror can be effective, it requires consistently building tension. Here, several scenes feel repetitive and stretch the story unnecessarily.

To Bhatt’s credit, he does succeed in creating an old-school horror vibe. Unlike many modern horror films that rely on loud sounds every few minutes, Echoes Of The Past attempts to build suspense gradually. Some sequences inside the mansion genuinely work and briefly remind viewers why Vikram Bhatt became such an important name in Bollywood horror. The hill station setting also contributes positively to the mood. The fog-covered landscapes, isolated mansion, and eerie silence create an atmosphere that feels suitably unsettling.

Unfortunately, the film repeatedly undermines itself through its visual effects. One of the biggest complaints viewers may have is the excessive use of AI-generated imagery and uneven VFX. Instead of enhancing the horror, many supernatural moments feel artificial and distract from the story. Several scenes that should have been frightening end up looking unintentionally dated.

Despite having an interesting premise, the narrative lacks surprises. Most revelations can be predicted well before they arrive, and the scares often feel recycled from older horror films. The emotional core of Dev and Sunheri’s story never receives the depth it deserves.

The film also struggles to maintain momentum. At over two hours, tighter editing could have significantly improved the experience.

From a technical perspective, the film delivers mixed results. The cinematography effectively captures the beauty and mystery of Maniktal. The mansion itself becomes a character in the story, and several visual compositions successfully create a sense of isolation. The editing, however, lacks urgency. Scenes linger longer than necessary, resulting in a slower pace.

The sound design and background score occasionally elevate the horror sequences, especially during the first half. There are moments where the atmosphere becomes genuinely creepy thanks to the audio design.

Music was always going to face comparisons with the original Haunted 3D, whose soundtrack remains popular even today. While Echoes Of The Past does not reach those heights, songs like Janmo Janam, Dard, and Lauta Do leave a decent impression.

Haunted 3D Echoes Of The Past Performances

Mimoh Chakraborty delivers a sincere performance as Dev. He handles the emotional scenes reasonably well and commits fully to the character’s journey. Unfortunately, the screenplay rarely gives him enough material to elevate the role beyond its limitations.

Chetna Pande brings vulnerability and grace to Sunheri. She fits the role naturally and shares decent chemistry with Mimoh. However, her character remains underdeveloped, preventing a stronger emotional connection.

Shruti Prakash performs confidently and makes her presence felt despite limited screen time. Gaurav Bajpai adds some lighter moments to the film and provides support whenever the narrative becomes too heavy. Hemant Pandey performs effectively as the caretaker, contributing to the film’s eerie atmosphere.

Praneet Bhatt, Mannveer Choudharry, and the supporting cast deliver competent performances and play their respective parts adequately.

Final Verdict

Haunted 3D: Echoes Of The Past feels like a film caught between nostalgia and modern filmmaking. Vikram Bhatt clearly wants to recreate the magic of his 2011 horror classic. The film contains moments that showcase his understanding of gothic horror and supernatural storytelling. The atmospheric setting, intriguing premise, and emotional undertones ensure that the film remains watchable.

However, weak screenplay choices, sluggish pacing, predictable scares, and inconsistent VFX prevent it from becoming the comeback many fans were hoping for.

For audiences who grew up watching Bollywood horror films from the late 2000s and early 2010s, there is a certain charm in revisiting this familiar style of storytelling. Haunted 3D: Echoes Of The Past may not reinvent the genre, but it offers enough mystery and nostalgia to keep horror enthusiasts engaged.

In the end, Haunted 3D: Echoes Of The Past is a decent one-time watch that works better as a tribute to old-school Bollywood horror than as a genuinely frightening experience.
