Let’s be honest — the last few Jurassic World movies felt more like a dinosaur-themed rollercoaster than actual stories we cared about. They were loud, chaotic, and stuffed with CGI mayhem. But Jurassic World Rebirth? It’s surprisingly… decent. Maybe even good. For the first time in years, a Jurassic movie remembers that dinosaurs are supposed to be awesome, not just background noise for explosions. The film stars Scarlett Johansson, Jonathan Bailey, Mahershala Ali, Rupert Friend, and Manuel Garcia-Rulfo.

The movie drops us into a world where dinosaurs aren’t that big a deal anymore. Thanks to climate change and overexposure, the public has moved on — and the only dinosaurs left are surviving near the Earth’s equator, where humans aren’t even allowed to go. But of course, when has that ever stopped anyone in this franchise?

Enter Zora Bennett (played by Scarlett Johansson), a no-nonsense mercenary hired by a shady pharma executive (Rupert Friend) to track down the world’s biggest dinosaurs and extract their blood for a potential heart disease cure. Yes, you read that right — this is basically a Jurassic Pharma Heist.

Joining her on this wild mission is Dr. Henry Loomis (Jonathan Bailey), a wide-eyed paleontologist who just wants to see real dinosaurs up close. They team up with a small crew, including Mahershala Ali as the calm and cool captain Kincaid, and a few “definitely-not-making-it-to-the-end” soldiers.

Meanwhile, a regular family — the Delgados — accidentally sails into this dangerous dinosaur zone. Their boat runs into a giant aquatic mosasaur, and they’re thrown into survival mode. Their journey brings a much-needed human heartbeat to the film, especially the kids, who bring that Jurassic wonder back into the picture.

Oh, and the dinos? Don’t expect the usual gang. The T-Rex only shows up for a quick bite (literally). The stars here are brand-new, lab-made “mutants” like the D-Rex (a dino with a battering-ram skull) and the winged “mutadons.” They’re weird, a bit ridiculous, but kind of cool to look at.

After three bloated Jurassic World movies, Rebirth feels like a reset. Director Gareth Edwards (Godzilla, The Creator) strips things down — fewer characters, tighter storytelling, and more focus on actual suspense and dino-thrills. The beginning is a little messy, juggling too many new faces and backstories. But once the dinosaurs show up and the mission kicks off, the movie really hits its stride.

There are some lovely callbacks to the original Jurassic Park. A character tears up when they see a dinosaur for the first time. A suspenseful scene with kids hiding from a creature. A water glass that ripples ominously. These moments aren’t just nostalgia bait — they actually work.

Visually, the film is stunning. Shot on 35mm in Thailand, everything looks rich and textured. You can feel the humidity in the air and the scale of the beasts lurking in the jungle. It’s a welcome break from the green-screen overload of recent blockbusters.

Is it groundbreaking? Not really. But Rebirth remembers the magic formula: dinosaurs + suspense + a sense of wonder = a good time.

Scarlett Johansson does what she can with Zora, but let’s face it — the character isn’t given much to work with. She’s tough, she’s grieving, she wants out of this life. That’s about it. Still, Johansson manages to give Zora some emotional weight, even if the script doesn’t.

Jonathan Bailey is a standout. His character, Dr. Loomis, is the heart of the film — his childlike fascination with dinosaurs is contagious. And Manuel Garcia-Rulfo, as a dad just trying to protect his kids, brings real warmth and urgency.

Mahershala Ali, as always, is solid, but criminally underused. The rest of the mercs? Well, let’s just say they’re mostly there to be eaten.

Despite the writing flaws, the cast brings enough charm and sincerity to make it work. And in a movie full of mutant dinosaurs, that’s saying something.

Final Verdict

Jurassic World Rebirth isn’t trying to reinvent the wheel — or the fossil. But what it does do is take us back to what made these films fun in the first place. Dinosaurs. Suspense. Adventure. And just a little heart.

Yes, the story’s a bit shaky. Yes, the “mutant” dinos are over-the-top. But the movie still manages to entertain, surprise, and even awe — especially if you go in with popcorn and low expectations.

It’s the best Jurassic movie since Jurassic Park III, and that’s not nothing.
