Watch: Karan Johar Says Salman Khan Told Only A ‘Paagal’ Will Do A Supporting Role In Kuch Kuch Hota Hai

Kuch Kuch Hota Hai is one of the biggest blockbuster movies in Bollywood. It was Karan Johar’s directorial debut. The movie was released way back in 1998.  Recently, Karan Johar talked about how Salman Khan came on board for Kuch Kuch Hota Hai. Karan Johar recalled how he approached many actors for the supporting role of Aman. Salman Khan has played the role of Aman. However, many actors turned the role down as they did not want to play the second lead to Shah Rukh Khan.

During an appearance in Indian Idol 12, Karan Johar talked about how Salman Khan was on board for the movie Kuch Kuch Hota Hai. According to Karan Johar, he was depressed as many actors rejected the role. However, during a party at Chunky Pandey’s house, he met Salman Khan. Karan Johar said,

“Toh woh meri taraf aaye aur unhone kaha apni style mein, ‘Tune kar li shopping?’ I said, ‘Shopping?’ He said, ‘Haan, tu gaya na sab ke paas. Woh shopping hi toh hoti hai. Lekin iss film ko karne ke liye kisi ko paagal hona chahiye aur main woh paagal hoon.’”

“(Salman came up to me and in his signature style asked me if I was done shopping. I was confused. He said, ‘Yes, you went to everyone, that is just like shopping. But someone needs to be mad to do this film and I am that mad person’).”

Karan Johar added that he had not even thought of approaching a big actor like Salman Khan and was surprised. The very next day, Karan Johar went to narrate the story to Salman Khan. However, Karan was surprised and equally scared as Salman said he is ‘in’ for the project only after listening to the first half. Karan added,

“Main darr gaya, maine socha inko lag toh nahi raha ki Shah Rukh ka role main inhe offer kar raha hoon. I said, ‘But sir, aapka role aaya nahi, woh toh second half mein hai.’ He said, ‘Mujhe kya farak padta hai? Main aapke pitaji ko jaanta hoon, main unke liye kar raha hoon yeh film.’”

“(I got scared, I thought maybe he misunderstood and assumed I was offering him Shah Rukh Khan’s role. I said, ‘But sir, your role is in the second half.’ He said, ‘How does it matter? I know your father, I am doing the film for him’).”

Salman Khan won the Filmfare Award for the Best Supporting Actor for the movie Kuch Kuch Hota Hai. The audience praised his role. Salman Khan played the role of Aman, the fiancé of Anjali, Kajol’s character. It was one of the best movies of that year, and even today, the movie Kuch Kuch Hota Hai has a separate fan base.
