After three successful seasons, the Mirzapur universe finally arrives on the big screen. The series played a major role in making Indian audiences embrace original OTT content, and characters like Kaleen Bhaiya, Munna Bhaiya and Guddu Pandit became pop culture favourites. Their dialogues became memes, their rivalries became talking points and their bhaukaal became a part of everyday conversations.
Now, Mirzapur The Movie brings that same world to theatres with a much bigger canvas. Written by Puneet Krishna and directed by Gurmmeet Singh, the film stars Pankaj Tripathi, Ali Fazal, Divyenndu, Ravi Kishan, Sonal Chauhan, Jitendra Kumar, Abhishek Banerjee, Shweta Tripathi Sharma, Shriya Pilgaonkar, Rasika Dugal, Sushant Singh and Mohit Malik. The goli, gaali, greed, betrayal and dysfunctional families are all back. The result is a massy entertainer that works well in parts, even though its lengthy runtime holds it back.
Mirzapur The Movie Story
Mirzapur The Movie takes an unusual route. Instead of continuing the story from Season 3, the film is set during the events of Season 1. It presents a parallel story that fits within the existing timeline and brings back several characters who had already met their fate later in the franchise.
Kaleen Bhaiya remains the undisputed king of Mirzapur. However, he has more faith in Guddu and Bablu than his own son Munna. Meanwhile, politician J P Yadav puts pressure on Kaleen Bhaiya to arrange funds for his election campaign. Kaleen therefore starts looking for a new supplier. This is where Bablu gets information about Babban Yadav, a businessman based in Jaisalmer who is ready to sell seven truckloads of drugs.
But Babban has his own agenda. He is not simply looking to do business with Kaleen Bhaiya. He wants to eliminate him. What follows is a dangerous game involving power, drugs, money and betrayal. The characters we know and love find themselves caught in another battle for supremacy. The story also gives us a chance to see these characters at a point in the timeline that fans had not explored before.
Mirzapur The Movie Review
The biggest achievement of Mirzapur The Movie is that it actually feels like Mirzapur. Puneet Krishna returns as the writer and understands the pulse of this universe. The dialogues have the same flavour, the characters retain their personalities and the confrontations have the aggression fans expect.
The decision to tell a parallel story is also quite interesting. It could have easily become confusing or unnecessary, but the film manages to fit itself into the established timeline without disturbing what happens later in the series. That is not an easy task, and the writing deserves credit for pulling it off.
The first half is easily the stronger portion. It builds the tension nicely and keeps you interested in the power games. The dramatic face-offs work particularly well. There may not be action in every other scene, but the film understands that Mirzapur does not always need gunfire to create impact.
The second half is where the film starts losing momentum. At more than three hours, Mirzapur The Movie is simply too long. Several scenes could have been shortened without affecting the story. Some characters also receive more attention than necessary, while the romantic portions feel forced. The female characters deserved stronger writing too. Beena Tripathi and Mumtaz Bibi get meaningful moments, but several other female characters are largely reduced to supporting roles.
Thankfully, the film picks up again as it approaches the climax. The mystery develops nicely, the twists start coming in and the final stretch brings back the excitement. The dialogues are another major highlight. A few one-liners have the potential to become instant fan favourites and social media material.
Technically, the film gets a major upgrade from the series. Sanjay Kapoor’s cinematography gives the world a larger and more cinematic appearance. The action by Amin Khatib is suitably raw and violent. The production design by Sonam Singh and Abhijit Gaonkar adds to the scale, while the costumes by Darshan Jalan and Neelanchal Ghosh remain realistic.
The songs, however, don’t make much of an impact. Sanson Ki Mala stands out mainly because of its placement and picturisation. Vaaroon Forever, Ghoom Ghoom and Do Numbari are average. John Stewart Eduri’s background score is far more effective and adds intensity to several important scenes. Manan Ashwin Mehta’s editing is functional but needed to be tighter, particularly in the second half.
Mirzapur The Movie Performances
Pankaj Tripathi slips effortlessly back into Kaleen Bhaiya. His restrained performance and controlled screen presence remain one of the film’s biggest strengths. Ali Fazal is equally convincing as Guddu Pandit, bringing the required aggression and vulnerability to the character.
Divyenndu is a standout. Munna is still dangerous, but the film gives us a more emotional and vulnerable side of him. Divyenndu handles these moments beautifully. Jitendra Kumar steps into the role of Bablu Pandit and makes it his own. He fits comfortably into the Mirzapur world and does not feel out of place.
Sonal Chauhan looks stunning and delivers a solid performance, while Mohit Malik makes an impact as Birju Lohar. Rasika Dugal, Shweta Tripathi Sharma and Shriya Pilgaonkar are effective in their respective parts, although some of the female characters deserved more to do. Sushant Singh, Sheeba Chaddha, Rajesh Tailang and Kulbhushan Kharbanda provide dependable support. Overall, the ensemble cast is one of the film’s biggest assets.
Final Verdict
Ravi Kishan is perfectly cast as Babban Yadav. He brings a certain confidence and unpredictability that makes the character interesting. Abhishek Banerjee also gets back into the skin of Compounder with ease.
Mirzapur The Movie is made with clear love for its characters and its loyal fanbase. It successfully brings the familiar madness of the series to the big screen and delivers strong performances, whistle-worthy dialogues, dramatic confrontations and a rousing finale.
The parallel storyline is an interesting experiment and fits surprisingly well into the existing universe. However, the three-plus-hour runtime, stretched portions, and forced romance prevent it from becoming a truly outstanding theatrical experience. Still, if you have followed Mirzapur from the beginning, there is enough bhaukaal here to make the theatrical visit worthwhile.
At the Box Office, Mirzapur The Movie is expected to open among the Top 4 Bollywood openers of 2026, behind Dhurandhar 2 and Border 2. It will be looking to challenge Awarapan 2, which opened at ₹23.40 crore on Day 1. With the massive popularity of the franchise and strong fan anticipation, the film has the potential to roar at the box office.
