Ponniyin Selvan 2 Review: Vikram And Aishwarya Stand Out In Mani Ratnam’s Magnum Opus

The epic historical action-adventure movie Ponniyin Selvan 2 is a Tamil-language movie from India. Mani Ratnam, who co-wrote them with Elango Kumaravel and B. Jeyamohan, is the film’s director. Additionally, it is produced by Lyca Productions and Madras Talkies. The two parts of Ponniyin Selvan are film adaptations of the 1955 novel of the same name by Kalki Krishnamurthy. Well, if you watched Part 1 of Ponniyin Selvan, you may have been anticipating Part 2. So finally, here it is.

Ponniyin Selvan 2 Story

The same-titled 1955 Tamil novel by author Kalki Krishnamurthy is the basis for director Ratnam’s two-part Ponniyin Selvan. Additionally, it tells the tale of Arulmozhivarman’s early years. He was one of the most powerful rulers in the south and later rose to power to become Rajaraja Chola I, the great Chola emperor. The first chapter ended with Chola chieftains organizing a rebellion against their own and Pandiya rebels pledging to shed royal blood.

In addition, there was the conundrum of who will reign as the future king: Prince Aditya Kariklan, Madhuranthakan, or Amarabujanga. One-third of the novel series is in Ponniyin Selvan Part 1, with the remaining story being in Part 2. Meanwhile, the voiceover narration of the story by megastar Chiranjeevi opens the second chapter of Ponniyin Selvan. What occurs to Nandini and Aditya Karikalan? The rest of the tale is about whether Madhuranthakan succeeds to the throne of the Chola kingdom.

Ponniyin Selvan 2 Review

The sequel to Mani Ratnam’s epic Ponniyin Selvan is currently in theatres. In the second, the core cast from Ponniyin Selvan Part One is still present. Vikram, Karthi, Aishwarya Rai, Jayam Ravi, and Trisha also take the lead and play significant roles. Furthermore, each character in this story undergoes an arc that places them in difficult situations or helps them overcome them. Vikram portrays the suffering and grief with ease and perfection. Among all the actors, Aishwarya Rai also got the most important role in the second film.

Additionally, Jayam Ravi excels in a few poignant scenes. The legendary director Mani Ratnam also did a fantastic job with Ponniyin Selvan 2. This captivating narrative captures the viewer’s interest right away. However, the same problems from the first installment – like the slow pace – recur. Even with the slow pace and knowledge of many of the roles, one can still get into confusion occasionally. Well, it might be due to the narrative’s complexity.

The emotions begin to surface in the second half as a couple of plotlines conclude. Moving on, even if it doesn’t give off much confidence outside, AR Rahman’s music matches the tone and story. Additionally, the cinematography by Ravi Varman is superb. The proceedings have a more organic sense, thanks to the lighting and visuals. Considering the scope of the situation, the editing is quite respectable.

Numerous Tamil directors have considered making a movie based on the book Ponniyin Selvan ever since it was published. It also includes a late 1950s attempt by M. G. Ramachandran. It never happened, however. Years later, in the late 1980s and early 2010s, Ratnam tried to adapt the book. Unfortunately, due to his limited resources at the time, he failed. In the meantime, Ratnam resurrected the idea in January 2019 after Lyca decided to finance the movie, referring to it as his dream project.

Final Verdict

Despite its flaws, Ponniyin Selvan 2 manages to maintain the interest of viewers who already have an interest in the characters and setting. The engaging narrative makes it simple to follow the proceedings. The scale, ambition, and casting also make the film a one-time viewing with realistic expectations from the outset. Our rating for this film is 3.5 out of 5.
