Raja Shivaji brings one of India’s most revered historical figures to the big screen with scale, emotion, and intent. Directed and written by Riteish Deshmukh, the film features a massive ensemble cast including Riteish Deshmukh, Salman Khan, Genelia Deshmukh, Sanjay Dutt, Abhishek Bachchan, Mahesh Manjrekar, Sachin Khedekar, Bhagyashree, Fardeen Khan, Jitendra Joshi, and Amole Gupte.

This is not just another historical drama. It feels like a film made with responsibility. A story that aims to present the journey of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj with respect and depth. From the very beginning, it is clear that the film wants to balance cinematic storytelling with historical significance.

Raja Shivaji Story

The story of Raja Shivaji is set in the 17th century, a time when power struggles defined the subcontinent. Shah Jahan is trying to dominate India, while Adil Shah and Nizam Shah resist in the south. Amid this conflict, Maharashtrians are shown facing oppression.

Shahaji, played by Sachin Khedekar, serves under Adil Shah, portrayed by Amole Gupte. Jijabai, played by Bhagyashree, urges Shahaji to rise against the injustice and fight for freedom. However, he does not agree with her vision. After Shivaji’s birth, circumstances change. Shahaji is sent away, and young Shivba grows up under Jijabai’s guidance. This is where the idea of Swarajya begins to take shape. The film spends time building this foundation, showing how the vision is planted early in Shivaji’s life.

As Shivaji grows older, he starts taking control. Forts like Torna, Kondhana, and Purandar come under his command. His rise does not go unnoticed for long. Adil Shah initially ignores him, but soon realizes the threat.

At the insistence of Begum Khadija, played by Vidya Balan, Adil Shah sends his most feared commander Afzal Khan, portrayed by Sanjay Dutt, to eliminate Shivaji. The narrative then builds towards this major confrontation.

Parallelly, Sambhaji Shahaji Bhosale, played by Abhishek Bachchan, becomes part of the larger conflict. His journey adds emotional weight to the story. The film moves towards the battle between Shivaji and Afzal Khan, which forms a crucial turning point.

Raja Shivaji Movie Review

The biggest strength of Raja Shivaji is its intent. The film does not treat its subject lightly. It takes time to build the world and the characters. The writing by Ajit Wadikar, Sandeep Patil, and Riteish Deshmukh focuses on important moments from Shivaji Maharaj’s life.

The screenplay is filled with dramatic and emotional sequences. It keeps the narrative engaging, especially in the first half. Just like Aditya Dhar’s Dhurandhar, the structure of Raja Shivaji has also been divided into chapters and it works well. It gives clarity and helps the audience follow the story.

Riteish Deshmukh’s direction deserves appreciation. He does not make the film about himself as an actor. Instead, he focuses on the story. That restraint works in favor of the film. Another strong aspect is the focus on strategy. The film does not rely only on battles. It highlights Shivaji Maharaj’s intelligence and planning. His approach to warfare, especially guerrilla tactics, is shown effectively.

However, the film is not without flaws. The runtime feels long at 195 minutes. Some portions in the middle slow down the pace. The delayed entry of adult Shivaji might not work for everyone, especially those expecting a quicker buildup.

Technically, the film is strong but not perfect. The cinematography captures the scale beautifully. The sets and costumes add authenticity.

Ajay–Atul’s music is one of the highlights. The songs blend well with the narrative, and the background score enhances emotional moments. It adds weight to key scenes and elevates the overall experience.

The editing could have been tighter. Trimming some scenes would have improved the pacing. The VFX, while decent, could have been better in certain sequences. These are minor issues but noticeable in a film of this scale.

Jitendra Joshi surprises with his performance, while Sachin Khedekar is solid as Shahaji. Amole Gupte is effective as Adil Shah. Fardeen Khan and Mahesh Manjrekar have limited screen time but do their parts well. Boman Irani adds value in his role.

Salman Khan’s cameo as Jiva Mahala in Raja Shivaji is impactful. Even in a brief appearance, he manages to leave a strong impression.

Raja Shivaji is a film that succeeds in delivering a powerful and emotionally engaging experience. It combines strong performances, detailed storytelling, and grand visuals.

While the film has minor issues like pacing and technical inconsistencies, they do not take away from the overall impact. The emotional depth and the respect with which the story is told stand out.

Riteish Deshmukh proves himself both as an actor and a director. Raja Shivaji manages to capture the spirit of Shivaji Maharaj’s journey and presents it in a way that connects with the audience. For those who appreciate historical dramas and stories rooted in Indian history, this is a must-watch. Don’t be surprise, if Raja Shivaji explodes like Chhaava in Maharashtra.
