Television actress Sana Makbul, who captivated audiences with her honest and spirited presence on Bigg Boss OTT 3, has recently opened up about a deeply personal and challenging health battle. The 32-year-old actress has been diagnosed with liver cirrhosis, following a prolonged struggle with autoimmune hepatitis, a rare condition where the body’s immune system turns against its liver.

In an emotional interview, Sana spoke about her diagnosis, how it unfolded over the years, and how she is coping with grit, grace, and hope.

“This didn’t happen overnight,” Sana said quietly, revealing that she had been living with autoimmune hepatitis for several years before her condition worsened. The illness had mostly stayed manageable, but recently, her immune system began attacking her liver more aggressively. That’s when doctors told her she had liver cirrhosis—a serious condition caused by scarring of the liver due to long-term inflammation.

She is now concentrating on her recovery after starting immunotherapy. “Right now, I may be walking a bit slower, but I’m still walking—and that’s what matters,” she said, with a calm determination.

While her condition is medical, the emotional and mental toll has been just as heavy. “It’s hard emotionally, mentally, physically—especially when you’re the one who has to keep things going, financially and otherwise,” she confessed. “You start feeling like life was just coming together, and suddenly, everything’s on pause.”

Professionally, Sana had to step back from a few projects. As someone who fought hard for her career milestones, she admitted that the setback broke her heart a little. “I worked so hard to reach where I am. And just when it was finally falling into place, my health hit rock bottom.”

This isn’t the first time Sana has opened up about her health. Earlier in March, during a candid podcast conversation with comedian Bharti Singh and her husband Haarsh Limbachiyaa, Sana had mentioned her autoimmune diagnosis. She explained how the condition forced her to adopt a vegan lifestyle, among other changes.

“Autoimmune hepatitis is rare. My body attacks its own liver. Some people have it as lupus or myositis, like Samantha Ruth Prabhu. For me, it’s the liver. It affects my energy, my digestion, my entire being,” she had shared.

What makes it harder is the lack of clear symptoms. It took until 2020 for her to receive a proper diagnosis.

Fans were recently alarmed when a friend posted a photo of Sana from her hospital bed—pale, tired, but still managing a soft smile. The image went viral, prompting speculation. Sana’s own words soon followed, clarifying the situation.

She explained that this sudden pause in her career was not something she wanted, but something her body demanded. “I have to be extra careful now,” she said. “Life isn’t the same anymore, but I still want to live it fully. I’ll come out stronger. I’m sure of that—I’m a fighter.”

In August 2024, Sana won Bigg Boss OTT 3, taking home the trophy and a ₹25 lakh cash prize. The reality show put her in the spotlight, where she won fans over not just with her gameplay but with her authenticity and resilience.

Her acting career, too, has been filled with a variety of memorable roles in shows like Iss Pyaar Ko Kya Naam Doon, Vish, Aadat Se Majboor, and Arjun – Har Yug Mein Aayega Ek. With her unique screen presence and quiet strength, she carved a special place in the hearts of viewers.

And yet, even at her peak, Sana now finds herself at a crossroads—this time, not in a competition, but in real life.

Despite everything, Sana Makbul remains hopeful. “This is just a phase,” she said. “It’s tough, but I’m tougher. I still dream. I still smile. And I still believe the best is yet to come.”

Her story is more than a health update. It’s a reminder of the invisible battles many people face behind their brightest smiles. Sana’s bravery in sharing her journey is a powerful message for fans, for those dealing with autoimmune conditions, and for anyone in the middle of a difficult season.

She might be walking slower now, but she’s still walking. And sometimes that’s all you need to continue.
