O Romeo Plot

O Romeo opens in Mumbai in 1995. Viewers are introduced to ‘Ustara’, played by Shahid Kapoor. A small-time gangster known for using a sharp blade, Ustara lives with his grandmother, portrayed by Farida Jalal. Despite being involved in crime, Ustara operates by his own code.

A senior cop named ‘Khan’, played by Nana Patekar, frequently seeks Ustara’s help in navigating bigger gangs and D-Company links. This establishes Ustara as a complex character — someone standing between the law and the underworld.

Things take a turn when he meets ‘Afsha’, played by Triptii Dimri. Afsha is a young widow whose husband, Mehboob, was killed by ‘Jalal’, played by Avinash Tiwary. Determined to avenge her husband’s death, Afsha approaches Ustara for help. He agrees.

However, her first attempts at revenge go wrong. She gets injured while trying to shoot Jalal’s men. Ustara takes her to his boat, nurses her back to health, and trains her in shooting. Their bond grows. But one day, Afsha disappears without explanation.

Months later, Ustara discovers that Afsha is living under a new identity as ‘Rani Sharma’ and is married to ‘Inspector Pathare’, portrayed by Rahul Deshpande. Her marriage is not out of love. It is strategic. She continues eliminating Jalal’s men quietly, using a needle as her weapon.

During Ganesh Visarjan, Ustara spots her killing another of Jalal’s associates. He realises everything — the marriage, the disappearance, the silence — it was all part of her revenge mission.

Soon after, Afsha, Khan, and Pathare board a local train. Ustara joins secretly, sensing danger. What follows is one of the film’s most intense sequences. A violent fight erupts inside the moving train. Khan is severely injured. Ustara falls from the train during the chaos. Everyone believes he is dead.

The scene is reminiscent of tragic Shakespearean themes, playing with the idea of presumed death.

Is Ustara Really Dead?

No. Ustara survives the fall. But the accident changes him. He loses his voice due to the injuries sustained in the train incident. While the world assumes he is gone, he continues to live in silence.

Meanwhile, Afsha travels to Spain with her husband to attend Jalal’s grand party. Spain becomes the stage for the final confrontation. At the party, Afsha seizes the opportunity and stabs Jalal with her needle. However, he does not die. Her plan is exposed, and she is captured.

On learning about Afsha’s situation, Ustara rushes to Spain despite his condition. In an unexpected turn, Jalal’s wife, Rabia, played by Tamannaah Bhatia, helps Ustara enter the mansion. Her motivations are layered, but her assistance becomes crucial.

The climax delivers a brutal and emotionally charged confrontation between Ustara and Jalal. The two come face-to-face in a violent battle inside the mansion.

Jalal almost succeeds in killing Ustara. The latter is severely injured and bleeding heavily. For a moment, it appears that Ustara will die, and Afsha’s revenge will remain incomplete.

But the tide turns.

Ustara gathers strength and defeats Jalal in combat. However, in a crucial emotional choice, he does not kill him. Instead, he gives Afsha the opportunity to complete what she started. Afsha takes a sword and fatally stabs Jalal. In the end, Jalal dies.

Does Afsha Get Her Revenge?

Yes. Afsha ultimately succeeds in avenging her husband’s murder. After years of planning, hiding, and bloodshed, she kills Jalal herself. It is not a quick or easy victory. It costs her emotionally and physically.

Ustara’s decision to step aside and let her deliver the final blow reinforces the film’s emotional core. This was always her battle.

With Jalal gone, the immediate threat ends. However, the consequences linger. Inspector Khan remains in the hospital recovering from the train fight. The system is shaken but not fully healed.

O Romeo closes on a hopeful yet dangerous note. Despite everything they have been through, Ustara and Afsha share a final exchange that hints their story is far from over. The dialogue suggests that their journey will continue, possibly setting up a sequel.

If another film happens, viewers can expect Ustara and Afsha to attempt building a life together — one that may never be entirely free from danger.

Conclusion

O Romeo delivers a dramatic and emotionally satisfying ending. Jalal does not succeed in killing Ustara or Afsha. Instead, he meets his end at Afsha’s hands. Ustara survives, albeit scarred and voiceless, symbolising sacrifice and resilience.

Vishal Bhardwaj’s modern adaptation stays true to the tragic undertones of Shakespeare while giving the story a revenge-driven closure. The ending balances tragedy with hope, love with violence, and revenge with survival.
